Big City Bread Cafe began in 1998 as a small retail vendor of breads and pastries created by the wholesale bakery Big City Bread, Inc. The retail space then moved to its current location and became a full-service cafe continuing to sell breads, pastries, and cakes to the general public-- adding coffee drinks, breakfast and lunch along the way. Over the past decade, the cafe became the face of Big City Bread's wholesale and retail enterprises.
In May 2005 the retail cafe was purchased by Matthew Scott and his wife Deenan, who reside in Athens with their two young children. Matthew is a graduate of Johnson and Wales University in Charleston with a degree in Applied Science in Baking and Pastry and with vast experience as a chef in professional kitchens in South Florida, Charleston, South Carolina and Athens. Deenan, a graduate of the University of Georgia's School of Music in Athens, is a teacher for the Clarke County School District. The couple met while working in a restaurant in Charleston, married and then made Athens their home.
The purchase of the cafe by Matthew and Deenan has improved the overall quality of the service and offerings. Matthew's experience as a pastry chef and baker, along with his new professional baking team, has allowed him to expand the variety of breads, pastries and cakes offered for sale in the cafe to meet the constantly growing demand.
Big City Bread Cafe is no longer affiliated with Big City Bread (now a subsidiary of Wolf Creek Bakery, Inc. of Michigan) and does not sell their products in the cafe or otherwise.
