Big City Bread Cafe/Meet the Regulars: Jim and Eleanor

Meet two of our favorite REGULARS
at Big City Bread Cafe:
Jim & Eleanor

Jim and Eleanor, tell us a bit about you— how long have you both lived in Athens?

We’ve lived here from 1969 to 1975,  then from mid-1978 to present.

What do you two do here in Athens, Georgia?

Jim is a retired (2000) forest scientist and Eleanor is a retired (2001) first grade teacher.

Our current activities include hiking, walks in the woods, solving puzzles of different types, reading, and being with our grandkids. Both of us are active in various capacities with Covenant Presbyterian Church, and Jim volunteered for several years as a transition consultant for Northeast Georgia Presbytery, assisting churches in the NE quarter of Georgia in the process of transitioning from one minister to another.

Jim has also been an officer/board member of the local Audubon Society, and Eleanor has been active with the Friends of the Library.

What makes Big City Bread Cafe special for you?

We have usually had at least one breakfast and one lunch per week at Big City Bread Cafe for years. In addition to the food, we’ve enjoyed the friendly and helpful staff and have made several friends there for life.

Two very special events at Big City that come to mind:

• Our kids and grandkids hosted a 50th anniversary celebration for us at Big City Bread Cafe;  Chef Matthew worked with our farmer-daughter on special recipes tailored to her farm’s produce.

• Jim gave Eleanor a surprise 75th birthday dinner at the Cafe for around 35 local and out-of-state friends.

“We enjoy just sitting and enjoying meals on the courtyard year-round, reading and people watching – especially seeing all of the kids and puppies playing on the patio.”

What’s your favorite time of day at Big City Bread Cafe?

This has varied over the years, depending on our schedules.  For instance, Eleanor met me at the cafe for lunch every week after my Tuesday yoga for quite a while.

Our very favorite time to visit the Cafe is for breakfast outside on very cold mornings— they’ll often have their patio heaters set up outside to keep diners warm.

What’s your favorite thing on the menu?

This is a hard one because we love so many things on the menu– the variety is great for tailoring to a specific time and mood.

Items that are pretty frequent on our favorites list are:
The Big City Biscuits, French Toast, Seasonal Vegetable Saute, BLT, Turkey Club, Turkey Burger and Tahini Salad.

“The extra crispy bacon at Big City is unsurpassed   -- just ask!”
